More about Bajamar
Bajamar features a long, powerful reef break over a cobblestone platform with multiple peaks that respond differently depending on tide and swell angle. The break produces extended rides that can stretch 300+ meters in favorable conditions, with both left and right-hand waves available. It works best when northern swell combines with offshore winds from the northeast, and performs across all tidal stages, though higher tides create steeper, more hollow peaks. The spot requires intermediate-to-advanced skills due to sharp reef, strong currents, and the complexity of reading which peaks will fire based on swell direction and tide state.
The area emerged as a significant surf destination starting in the 1960s-70s when it attracted European tourists seeking both natural pools and nearby reef breaks. The reef and surrounding peaks—El Arenal, El Lobo, Las Bordas, Baja Nueva, and El Paso—became anchors for the regional surfing community and continue to host regional competitions organized by Canarian federations. Winter months from November through March see the most consistent swells from North Atlantic groundswells pushing into Tenerife's northern coast.
Bajamar sits in the San Cristóbal de La Laguna municipality in northeast Tenerife, roughly 14 kilometers from La Laguna proper via the TF-13 highway, about 20 minutes by car. The area is accessible via TITSA bus lines 050 (from La Laguna) or 105 (from Santa Cruz). Free parking exists near the pools and waterfront, though it fills quickly during peak seasons. Access from the south requires driving up the TF-1 and TF-5 highways to La Laguna, adding about 75 minutes of travel time.
