More about Backdoor

Backdoor is the right-breaking counterpart to Pipeline, peeling off the same reef peak but over a shallower and more critical section that produces a faster, less predictable tube. It requires northwest to north-northwest swells with specific frequency characteristics to work properly—shorter to mid-period energy angles the reef correctly to create a rideable barrel, whereas other swell angles produce dangerous closeouts over exposed lava-reef ledges. The wave is exceptionally shallow and technical, offering opportunities for intense barrel rides but with little margin for error, as mistakes typically result in hard collisions with razor-sharp reef.

Pipeline itself was first surfed in 1961 by Phil Edwards, though Backdoor didn't gain prominence until the late 1970s when Shaun Tomson revolutionized backhand tube-riding during the 1975–76 Pipe Masters, establishing the right-hander as a distinct and technically demanding discipline. Kelly Slater later transformed perceptions of Backdoor by winning seven Pipe Masters titles and demonstrating that the wave could be ridden with nearly the same fluidity as Pipeline, making it a centerpiece of professional competition and judging. Today the break hosts the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, an invitation-only event, alongside the annual Pipe Masters competition held each December.

Backdoor is accessed via Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea along Kamehameha Highway, roughly an hour north of Waikiki. The park offers free parking that fills quickly during good conditions, with surfers walking left from the main beach to reach the break. Its proximity to other elite North Shore waves including Pipeline and Off-the-Wall makes it part of one of the world's highest concentrations of expert reef breaks.
