More about Back beach
Back Beach offers primarily beach breaks with both left and right-hand waves across a range of swell conditions, though it's exposed to the strongest swells and often doesn't break consistently. Southwest swell paired with northeast offshore wind provides the most reliable waves, with conditions peaking in winter—June in particular brings the best runs of clean waves. Waves typically reach one to three meters, making this an intermediate to advanced break rather than a beginner spot, despite the calmer Mahomet's corner and Tarcoola sandbar sections offering easier entry for newer surfers.
Geraldton has supported competitive surfing for over fifty years through the Sunshine Surf Masters, which showcases local and regional talent across multiple age groups. The area has also hosted junior state championships that have developed surfers who later reached professional and international rankings, including competitors now known at elite levels. The region's competitions and club infrastructure suggest surfing here has remained a regular activity since at least the mid-20th century.
Back Beach sits approximately 4.5 hours north of Perth, accessible via the Brand Highway. The area features multiple car parks with facilities including a surf club, toilets, showers, and grassed reserves overlooking the ocean. Lifeguarded swimming areas operate seasonally (October to April). The beach spans roughly 4 kilometers, with distinct zones: Mahomet's provides sheltered conditions for learners, Tarcoola offers sandbar waves suitable for progressing surfers, and Back Beach proper faces directly south for larger swells. Visitors should expect rip currents through a continuous bar system, rocks, and strong shorebreak, and be aware that water conditions can shift rapidly given the beach's high exposure to ocean swells.
