More about Aviones
Aviones is an exposed reef break featuring a steep A-frame with well-defined left and right channels formed by a shallow scallop-shaped bottom. The wave produces punchy, hollow-faced rides and is known for holding shape well under north swell, particularly when accompanied by south or southeast winds that groom the face. It works best around mid to high tide and can range from shoulder-high to overhead in size. The break has a single narrow entry and exit point on the reef, and conditions typically deteriorate by midday when wind shifts onshore.
Aviones has hosted professional competitions through Volcom's Catfish Surf Series and remains one of the most frequented contest venues in Puerto Rico. The break gained recognition as an island destination during the 2000s, though its history prior to that period is not well documented. Its association with local figure Willie Carrosco suggests it has been a known break within the regional surf community for decades.
Access is straightforward via Route 187 in Pinones, approximately 10–20 minutes northeast of San Juan. Free parking is available along the roadside, though spots fill quickly on weekends. A wooden ladder provides beach access. The reef presents genuine hazards including sea urchins, sharp coral, and a strong lateral current that can move surfers from left to right; many local accounts recommend arriving early to avoid afternoon crowds and deteriorating conditions.
