More about Avalon Point
Avalon Point is primarily a long, mellow left-hander over a rocky reef that rewards drawn-out carving turns in smaller conditions but becomes considerably steeper and more demanding once faces exceed head height. The break offers multiple takeoff points along the point with occasional shorter right-hand waves off the top, and the underlying reef structure allows it to hold swell up to around three to three-and-a-half meters. The consistent geometry means it maintains reliable shape when swell approaches from the west-southwest, though the exact wave intensity and ride length vary across different sections of the point.
The spot has hosted the WSL Peel Pro Junior, a World Surf League junior competition for twenty-and-under competitors that serves as a qualifying event for the world junior championship and forms part of the broader WA Pro Surf Series competition calendar established in recent years.
Avalon Point sits in Wannanup roughly eleven kilometers south of Mandurah and has become particularly established among longboarders—the beach is colloquially known as "Malvalon" among locals. The break tends to be crowded given its consistent performance and accessible location. While it offers reliable, rideable waves during spring and the cooler months, summer conditions flatten considerably. The beach maintains a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere with weekend amenities including a coffee van, though swimmers and surfers should remain aware of sea urchins and shark presence.
