More about Avalanche

Avalanche is a rock-based reef break forming in a small sandy cove with a right-hand primary direction. The takeoff sits behind a rock ledge that appears intimidating but proves manageable, leading to a fast, hollow section with good walls when conditions align. Low to mid tide offers the best shape. The break requires substantial swell to perform, and sand migration over the years has deepened the seabed, reducing how hard the swell hits the formation and making it increasingly fickle.

Used to rank among Port Elizabeth's premier waves when conditions were favorable, though heavy sand loss has diminished consistency. The break remains part of the Algoa Bay lineup where local surfers hunt for uncrowded waves, and Avalanche can provide respite from busier peaks given its less-accessible position along the coast.

Located along the scenic coastal drive near Schoenmakerskop with access via Marine Drive, the spot remains moderately accessible for local knowledge holders. Watch for fishing lines which present a recurring hazard. The wave ends in a contained cove, creating a self-contained session zone.
