More about Arrifana
Arrifana is a southwest-facing bay with both left and right beach breaks alongside a technical right-hander that peels off the harbor wall. It works consistently across the tidal cycle and receives most swells, performing best with northwest to west swells and northeast offshore winds. The bay terrain slopes gradually, creating walls suited to learners on smaller days while channeling longer-period swells into steeper, punchier peaks for intermediate and advanced surfers. The shallow bottom with abundant rocks and boulders means careful positioning; the harbor-wall right demands overhead+ swell to clear surrounding stones and suits only experienced surfers.
Arrifana has developed as a popular teaching destination and regional competition venue. The NSL No Pro Invitational was founded there, aimed specifically at amateur Algarve surfers rather than professionals. The break attracts local events including the Sunset Fest and Fisherman's Festival, reflecting its role as both a working fishing village and established surf destination.
Access reaches the beach from the village of Aljezur via the surrounding sandstone cliffs, which provide wind protection by cutting onshore air. The spot lies within the protected Costa Vicentina reserves approximately ninety minutes south of Lisbon, drawing a steady mix of learners from nearby towns and traveling surfers seeking a more sheltered Algarve alternative to more exposed breaks.
