More about Anza
Anza produces a clean A-frame peak with both left and right-hand peelers, the right-hander peeling over a mix of sand and reef while the left works primarily over sand. The break is generally fast and powerful, favoring intermediate and advanced surfers. It handles a wide range of swell sizes from 3 to 10 feet and performs best when northwest swell combines with northeast wind, particularly during the winter months from October through March when swells are most consistent and organized. High tide is the preferred water level, though rising tide during high water can also work.
Anza has grown into a recognized spot within Morocco's broader surf development since the early 2000s, when the country's coastal communities began establishing formal instruction and tourism infrastructure. The area around Taghazout and Agadir has since become home to numerous international competitions, including rounds of major professional tour events that have brought visibility to Moroccan breaks. This competitive activity reflects Anza's standing as one of the more consistent and rideable peaks along the southern coast.
Anza sits about 10 kilometers from Agadir's airport, making it accessible by a short drive from the city with parking available directly on the beach. The right side of the beach offers easier paddle-out access than the southern end, which has scattered rocks and reef hazards. A significant water-quality concern persists due to sewage input from nearby sources, which can affect conditions. Crowds tend to remain light on smaller swell days, though larger swells can draw 60 or more surfers, particularly during peak season and among local Moroccan surfers. Rip currents become notably strong on bigger days.
