More about Antiques
Antiques is a right-hand reef break that typically produces 2 to 6 feet of surf and works at all stages of the tide. It responds best to southeast swell combined with north-northwest winds, particularly during winter and especially in March. The wave tends to be mushy and loses power quickly as it interacts with the reef, making it well-suited for beginners and intermediate surfers practicing fundamentals. The break lacks the intensity of nearby Tiger Stripes and is generally more forgiving, though surfers encounter the standard hazards of a shallow coral reef: sharks and powerful rip currents.
The break has no documented local surf history or discovery narrative. It is currently used as a teaching wave by charter boat operators who introduce beginner surfers to the southern atolls before moving them to more demanding breaks in the area. No named surfers are known to specialize in it, and no surfing competitions have been held there. The Maldives' southern atolls appear to be developing an indigenous surf scene only recently, with the first local participants still establishing themselves on nearby waves.
Antiques sits in the channel between Gan and Gadhdhoo islands in Huvadhoo Atoll, the Maldives' largest and most southerly atoll system. Access is exclusively by boat, typically chartered from Gan, which has the region's international airport. The break remains rarely crowded due to its remote location and the logistics required to reach it. Most surfers encounter it as part of a multi-break charter day that includes the nearby left-hand wave Tiger Stripes, with established operators using it as a convenient beginner stopover in an otherwise dispersed landscape of more challenging reef breaks.
