More about Marinella

Marinella is a sand-bottom beach break shaped by jetties into both left and right peaks. Waves average 1.3–1.8 meters with periods around 11–13 seconds and work at all tides, though mid-tide is preferred. It responds best to west or northwest swell with east winds providing the critical offshore shape. The sandbanks shift seasonally—on good days this creates steep, punchy shoulders that open into barrels, but when sand migrates or wind turns onshore, the waves become disorganized and mushy. Autumn, particularly October, offers the most consistent conditions.

Access is straightforward via Avenue des Mailhouns on the northern Anglet waterfront, with a dedicated parking lot (free for locals, paid for visitors May–October). The beach is lifeguarded during summer, flanked by rocky dykes that keep swimmers safer than most Basque breaks, and surrounded by restaurants and a surf school (Le Club de la Glisse, operating since 1988).

Marinella itself does not appear in records of major surf competitions or historical sessions. Anglet hosted France's first national championships in 1965 and major international events in subsequent decades, but these took place at other breaks like La Barre and Sables d'Or, which attracted elite Australian and American surfers. Marinella's documented role is as a teaching and beginner-intermediate venue rather than a competition or historically significant big-wave spot.
