Le Club is an exposed beach and jetty break known primarily for fast, powerful barreling left-handers that wall up on westerly wind and demand solid paddle power and positioning. Both lefts and rights break here on northwest groundswells with southeast wind, working best at low and mid tide in smaller swell (1.5–2 meters ideal); above that, the break loses shape. The sand-bottomed beach produces fairly consistent waves year-round, with autumn—especially October—offering the cleanest conditions, though strong rip currents and backwash between the jetties make exit strategy important.
Le Club became Anglet's most sought-after wave in the 1960s as French surfing grew. The French Surfing Championships inaugural event was held in Anglet in 1965, and the town hosted the 1968 World Championships (La Barre) with competitors like Australian legends Nat Young and Wayne Lynch. Since then, Le Club has hosted regular French federation events and the Pro Anglet tour stop. The break's reputation for powerful shaped waves and consistent swell made it the de facto main spot in a town of 11 beaches compressed into 4.5 kilometers.
Le Club sits along Avenue des Vagues in the Marinella beach section of Anglet. Access requires driving or biking; paid parking applies May through October (9am–7pm daily for non-residents), with bike storage available nearby. The break is consistently crowded year-round—expect to share the water with locals from Anglet Surf Club and visiting surfers from across Europe—and localism can be an issue during peak swell. The jetties themselves create man-made hazards that merit careful site reconnaissance before paddling out.
