More about La Barre

La Barre is a hollow, fast beach break formed at the mouth of the Adour River, shaped by two jetties that create distinctive peaks. It breaks in both directions but favors left-hand waves, particularly on westerly to northwesterly swell at low tide. The hollow sections allow for barrels, and the fast-moving walls suit intermediates and above, though the break can become exceptionally powerful during autumn and winter swells. The jetty geometry offers some wind protection from north or south winds.

The spot gained international prominence in September 1968 when it hosted the inaugural World Surfing Championships, an event that brought Australian and American surfing legends including Nat Young and Wayne Lynch to the Basque Coast. The championships coincided with the global shortboard revolution and helped establish Anglet as a major European surf destination. The competitive heritage remains visible today with commemorative monuments to early pioneering surfers embedded in the promenade.

Located on Anglet's northern coastline between the Adour River mouth and the town's ice rink, La Barre sits in a heavily developed seaside resort with abundant amenities. The surrounding river on two sides creates a more sheltered beach environment than other nearby breaks. Large free parking is available directly adjacent to the ice rink off Avenue de l'Adour, making access straightforward. Water quality can degrade after heavy rain or river runoff, requiring attention to local conditions before paddling out.
