More about Chambre d Amour

Chambre d'Amour is a reliable beach break that produces both left and right-hander peelers on a sand bottom. It handles anything from small, mushy swells under a meter to powerful 2.5-meter-plus surf, working consistently across all tidal stages. Northwest swell and southeast winds are ideal, with October typically offering the most consistent conditions, though the break remains active year-round. The formation is sheltered by a cliff that protects it from southerly wind and creates cleaner water than nearby beaches. The break suits intermediate surfers most but welcomes beginners on smaller days, though persistent crowding and occasional localism can make lineups challenging, especially in summer.

Chambre d'Amour holds central importance in French surfing history. Joël de Rosnay, who pioneered French surfing in 1957, helped establish the country's second surf club here in 1964 with ceremony attended by actress Deborah Kerr. The beach hosted the 1968 La Barre World Surfing Championships, introducing Australian champions Nat Young and Wayne Lynch to European crowds. In 1995, Anglet invented the nocturnal Surf de Nuit competition at this same beach, blending glow sticks and LED boards into a World Surf League special event that remains unique in professional surfing. Today the beach anchors Anglet's role as a regular European World Surf League circuit stop.

Access is straightforward: the beach lies less than five minutes' walk from paid parking at the entrance. Street parking exists nearby, and the beach offers dedicated accessible spaces with wheelchair ramps. Facilities include multiple surf schools offering lessons, showers, lockers, and restaurants overlooking the water. Summer months draw large crowds, so quieter sessions come early in the season or during shoulder periods.
