More about Anglesea

Anglesea is a sandy rivermouth break where waves build across a shifting seabed shaped by river flow and sandbanks, creating multiple peaks along a 2.5-kilometre stretch. Best conditions arrive with a south-southeast swell meeting an offshore northwest wind, typically in mid-tidal cycles; waves generally reach waist-high to overhead height and can peel for over a hundred metres when the banks align well. The main hazard is a partially submerged groyne, and the patrolled beach can draw substantial crowds during good swells.

Anglesea's surf history is less established than nearby Bells Beach—the town itself was historically difficult to access and remained isolated until better roads developed the Great Ocean Road in the mid-twentieth century. The Great Ocean Road region, particularly around Bells to the east, became central to Australian surfing culture from the 1960s onward, and Anglesea developed as a secondary break for learners and intermediate surfers seeking less crowded conditions than the more famous nearby breaks.

The beach sits roughly 20 kilometres down the Great Ocean Road from the surf capital of Torquay and just 10 minutes south of Bells Beach. Free parking is available close to the sand with straightforward vehicle access; amenities include lifeguard patrols, facilities, and picnic areas. Point Roadknight, a sheltered cove west of the main break, offers an alternative entry point for less experienced surfers seeking calmer water.
