More about Anahola Bay
Anahola Bay is a reef break on Kauai's northeast shore that produces both left and right waves over coral reef, occasionally with sand and lava features. A large outer reef absorbs much of the swell energy, keeping waves inside the protected bay mellow and beginner-accessible, typically waist-high to double overhead. Best conditions arrive in winter months with north to northeast swell and south to southwest wind following storm fronts. The break is fairly consistent year-round.
The break has long been a local surf spot, though documented history is sparse. The bay is notable as a location associated with Hawaiian waterman culture and legend; access passes through native Hawaiian homestead lands where local relationships matter to your welcome. Titus Kinimaka, the legendary big wave surfer, has connections to this area.
Anahola Beach Park sits on Highway 56 near mile marker 13 on Kauai's windward shore, approximately halfway between Lihue and Princeville. A free unpaved parking lot provides access year-round. The bay has lifeguards on duty during peak tourism season, with showers and restrooms available. Strong currents and rip currents run near the river mouth where river water meets ocean, requiring awareness and respect from visitors.
