More about Amoreira
Amoreira is a river-mouth break with both a left-hand point peeling toward the bay and right-hand walls on the northern end, working best at mid-tide on smaller swells between 0.5–2.5 meters from the west or northwest. Southeast winds keep it cleaner than the strong offshore exposures it can receive. It transitions from beginner-friendly small-wave terrain in the protected bay to a challenging intermediate break when swell pushes above 6 feet, at which point currents intensify and the sand becomes choppy. The spot handles swell consistently year-round but delivers the cleanest, most shaped waves during the October-to-April winter season.
Rip currents, particularly near and around the river mouth, are the primary hazard and worsen during larger swells and tide changes; high tide amplifies flows near the river channel itself. The northern end features rocks that are typically visible and avoidable, though some become exposed at low tide. The beach can rapidly degrade into an unruly mess once swells exceed this threshold, making it unsuitable for inexperienced surfers on bigger days.
Praia da Amoreira sits roughly 8.7 kilometers northwest of Aljezur, accessible via the asphalted road toward Rogil (about 15 minutes' drive). A small car park sits on the northern bluff with boardwalk access down to the beach; overflow parking is available along the roadside or at a southern viewpoint lot, though the southern lot has no direct beach access. A restaurant sits at the northern end, and the beach has become a standard stop for local surf schools and camps.
