More about Amban Beach
Amban Beach features exposed right-hand breaks peeling off a large fringing reef system. The beach consistently produces waves in the 1.5 to 2 meter range and works for both beginning and experienced surfers. The spot is most active during the October to March swell window, when Pacific swells and winds favor the region.
Amban has hosted significant WSL competitions, including the West Papua international event in 2024 and the Manokwari Pro (a QS 2000 and Pro Junior event) in 2025. The event drew competitors from across Asia, with I Made Ariyana taking the men's title and Anon Matsuoka winning the women's division. It ranks among West Papua's premier established breaks.
The beach sits along a black sand shoreline roughly one kilometer long, surrounded by tropical forest and coastal swampland facing the Pacific. Visitors should bring their own equipment as no local rentals exist, though accommodation options like the Amban Beach House and surfing schools have emerged in recent years to serve the growing interest in the spot.
