More about Aliso Creek
Aliso Creek is a beach break with a sand bottom that produces fast, hollow waves but ranks among the least consistent spots on the Orange County coast. The break works on north and south swells, typically performing best during medium-period swells (8–16 seconds) on high incoming tides. What sets it apart is the standing wave phenomenon: when the Aliso Creek basin fills and breaches the beach berm, it creates a temporary river wave suitable for skimboards, bodyboards, and occasionally surfboards—these conditions occur sporadically, perhaps a handful of times per year. Heavy shorebreak, rip currents, undertow, and periodic pollution from creek runoff are constant hazards.
Aliso Beach has been central to skimboarding rather than surfing since the mid-1970s, when Victoria Skimboards held the first World Skimboard Championship here in 1976. The annual VIC (Victoria Skimboards International Competition) has run continuously since and remains the most prestigious skimboarding event globally. While traditional surfing rarely factors into the spot's history, the river wave phenomenon has attracted attention in recent years through social media edits and occasional media coverage, sometimes contentiously as locals debate whether deliberately breaching the berm crosses environmental lines.
Aliso Beach Park sits on Pacific Coast Highway near Laguna Beach's central coast, with metered parking ($3.60 per hour, 8am–10pm) across two lots connected by an underground tunnel to the beach. Amenities include restrooms, fire rings, and basic facilities. The location is easily accessible from the main PCH corridor, though parking fills quickly on weekends given the beach's popularity and the regular draw of the skimboarding community.
