More about Alfonsos

Alfonsos is an exposed reef break in northern Baja California near Rosarito, roughly five kilometers north of town. The break produces left and right-hand waves over reef, with a dependable swell window but variable consistency—in peak season (July), clean waves occur roughly one quarter of the time while the rest tends toward blown-out conditions or waves too small for most surfers. Typical wave height sits in the 2–3 foot range.

The spot works best in summer, particularly July, when southwest ground swells combine with offshore east winds to produce rideable conditions. Rocks are a significant hazard in the lineup that requires local knowledge or careful observation to navigate safely. Tidal range is moderate and forgiving; the break can hold water through most of the tide cycle.

I could not find documented surf history specific to Alfonsos, nor any record of notable competitions or named surfers associated with it. The wider Ensenada region saw early competitive surfing in the 1960s at other breaks like San Miguel, but Alfonsos itself does not appear in historical accounts I could locate.

Access is straightforward via road from Rosarito, with the spot situated among other established breaks in the area like K-38 and Baja Malibu. General Abelardo L Rodriguez International Airport in Tijuana is about 29 kilometers away.
