More about Aguçadoura

Aguçadoura is a sandy beach break that produces waves between waist and overhead height, topping out around head-high on larger swells. The break extends across 100 meters of sand and works at all tidal stages, though some locals avoid surfing at dead high tide. West swell combined with east (offshore) wind provides ideal conditions, though the break also responds to northwest, southwest, and north swells. The sand shifts seasonally, maintaining relatively consistent peak locations.

Aguçadoura remains among the most surfed northern Portuguese beaches and draws both local and Spanish surfers. The area saw a major infrastructure project in 2008 when the world's first commercial wave farm was installed 5 km offshore, operating briefly before decommissioning. Beyond its popularity as a regional spot, specific details about discovery, notable sessions, or local competitions remain elusive in English-language sources.

The beach sits in Póvoa de Varzim just north of Porto and has wide, well-maintained sand. Paid parking is available at the beach entrance with limited spaces; free dirt parking and street parking exist nearby. A small surf school operates seasonally during the bathing months. Facilities are minimal—no permanent beach bars except during summer months—making it a straightforward, local-feeling spot rather than a tourist destination.
