More about Agate Beach
Agate Beach is an exposed sand-bottom break that produces workable left and right waves when conditions align properly, which doesn't happen as often as at more protected areas. The break performs best when winter swells from the west meet offshore wind from the east, conditions that most reliably occur during January and other winter months. At other times of year the beach remains rideable but with smaller and less organized wave patterns. Water temperature demands thermal protection, and the lineup is shared with seals that can be protective of their space. Rip currents are a hazard to watch for.
Access to the break is via Agate Beach State Recreation Area, located about ten minutes north of Newport near Yaquina Head. The site has two parking areas and charges a vehicle fee; an alternative is free parking outside the boundaries with a longer walk. Beach access crosses under the old Highway 101 through a tunnel before reaching the sand. Facilities include restrooms, and the area is open from early morning through evening, making it accessible for day surfers.
