More about aganoa
Aganoa is a hollow, powerful reef break on Savai'i that offers both left and right-hand waves breaking year-round in the 2 to 10-foot range. The right side breaks consistently and handles larger swells well, with multiple takeoff zones suitable for different skill levels. South and south-southeast swells provide the most energy, and the break performs best during mid to high tide, as the reef becomes dangerously exposed at lower water levels. Offshore winds from the north-northwest help create clean conditions, particularly from April to October.
The break has been ridden for decades, with the area developing from local use in the late 20th century into a recognized destination after the Samoa Surf Riders Association formed in 2012. The spot gained regional prominence when it hosted the surfing competition at the 2007 South Pacific Games. Since then, it has become a training ground for young Samoan surfers competing internationally, including at world junior championships.
Aganoa Lodge sits directly on the beach frontside the main break, providing immediate access to waves by paddle from shore. The location lies on Savai'i's southeast coast near the village of Fa'aala, in the Salelologa area where the main ferry terminal connects the island to Upolu. The shallow reef and strong currents present significant hazards alongside the natural reef structure itself.
