More about 26th Ave

26th Ave breaks over a hybrid bottom of sandstone reef and kelp bed transitioning to sand, rocks, and shifting sandbars offshore. The break produces both lefts and rights and handles small to medium swells best, closing out on larger days. It works optimally on low tide with incoming tide providing shape; at high tide the break becomes congested and less defined. Southwest swell is ideal, with north-northwest offshore winds cleaning up the face. The shifting sandbars that characterize the break mean the wave constantly changes shape and position, requiring adaptation from surfers.

Access is narrow and tide-dependent, with a small parking area at the end of 26th Avenue holding only three cars; nearby Moran Lake Park a few blocks north on East Cliff Drive offers more reliable parking. Stairs lead down to a sandy beach sandwiched between Moran Lake and Corcoran Lagoon on Santa Cruz's east side. At low tide the beach opens into a workable stretch hugging the base of the cliffs; at high tide the sand largely disappears. The wave lies northeast of the more crowded lineups at Pleasure Point and Steamer Lane, offering a less impacted alternative on the east side break roster.
