13th beach

13th Beach is a complex stretch of sandbars interspersed with reef and rock ledge patches that produce multiple distinct peaks along several kilometers of coast. The break handles swell from around 1 ft and averages around 1.5 m, improving in size and power during winter. South-southwest swell combined with north-northeast wind produces the best conditions, typically in July when clean waves appear most frequently. The waves vary significantly across the beach—some peaks generate fast, hollow sections that demand intermediate to advanced skill, while others accommodate newer surfers. Mid tide produces the most consistent shape. Hazards are substantial: persistent rips, scattered rocks and reef, significant crowds at popular times, and at certain locations like Poo Point, offshore sweep can push surfers into heavier sections.

13th Beach has no prominent documented competition history or roster of notable surfers in publicly available sources, though it hosts a local surf lifesaving club and attracts professional surfers to its varied lineup.

Located west of Barwon Heads between Barwon Heads and Black Rock, the stretch extends roughly 3–6 km and takes its name from the nearby thirteenth hole of Barwon Heads Golf Course. Multiple carpark facilities provide direct access to the beach. Lifeguard patrols are seasonal—volunteer lifesaving club patrols typically occur weekends in summer, with paid lifeguards on weekdays during summer months.
