History

Rainbow Surfboards was founded by Johnny Gale in 1969 in Laguna Beach, California, during the counterculture era. The brand became known for hand-crafted boards shaped by figures including Mike Hynson—one of the two protagonists of Bruce Brown's landmark 1966 surf documentary "The Endless Summer"—along with Rich Pavel, Steve Clark, and Gary MacNabb. The company was distinctive for combining innovative board design with elaborate custom artwork by recognized artists, embodying the psychedelic aesthetic of the early 1970s surfing scene.
