History

Pukas is a family surf business rooted in Spain's Basque Country, with a history that connects board building, surf shops, schools and contests. Its own timeline traces Iñigo Letamendia and friends' earlier boardmaking to Casa Lola in Somo, Cantabria, in 1973, under names including Tablas Santa Marina. The Pukas name followed in 1979, when Miguel Azpiroz joined Iñigo Letamendia and Marian Azpiroz as a key partner.

The company identifies all three as founders and dates its Olatu factory to 1988. Located in the Basque Country near San Sebastián and Zarautz, Olatu became part of Pukas's work with international surfboard builders. This history distinguishes the earlier shaping community from the later brand and factory, while showing how board production developed alongside the company's wider surf activities.
