History

Michel Junod's surfboard work developed through workshops in New Jersey, Santa Cruz and Hawai‘i. In his own retrospective, he describes summers learning to shape and build boards with Carl “Tinker” West in New Jersey. He recounts moving to Santa Cruz in 1970 for work at the Overlin brothers' factory and later forming West Cliff Surfboards with Chuck Strelitz.

Junod says he shaped for the Dick Brewer and Lightning Bolt labels in Honolulu while also making custom boards for North Shore friends and local surfers. His North Shore account describes a small crew with separate glassing, fin, sanding and polishing roles. A Save The Waves history includes him among Santa Cruz surfers experimenting with surf-leash approaches in the late 1960s.
