History
Guy Okazaki describes his surfboards as a meeting of Hawaiian gun outlines and shorter, wider Australian templates. In a Liquid Salt interview, he recalled watching Michael Peterson and Peter Townend on boards with flatter, thinner foils and wanting to bring those ideas to California. His official history places this design interest within his experience in Hawai‘i, Australia and Venice Beach.
Custom work, in his account, begins with listening to what the surfer wants the board to do. A PBS SoCal profile documents his hand-carving process; Okazaki's own interview emphasizes adjusting the design to the recipient's needs.
