History
Dick Brewer's shaping career connected several generations of surfboard design. In a 2024 Hawaiʻi Public Radio interview, surf historian Jim Kempton highlighted the Pipeliner, mini-gun and tow-in board as major developments associated with Brewer's work.
Born in Minnesota and raised in California, Brewer settled in Hawaiʻi in 1960. Kempton described how Brewer brought an engineering background to shaping and drew connections between the behavior of water around a board and aerodynamic ideas used in aircraft and automobiles. Brewer died in Hawaiʻi in 2022 at the age of 85.
